Summer survivors

On a damp and windy late afternoon visit to the allotment to tend the chickens, it's surprising that, in spite of being several frosts towards the start of Winter, hanging on  through wind and rain are a few hardy and much welcomed spots of colour. Here's a bright yellow marigold looking for all the world as though it's holiday weather...



... and Russian comfrey surviving in a sheltered spot by the compost bins.



A somewhat battered bloom hangs on for a few more days...



... although some plants have given up the ghost and are ensuring survival for future generations.



This marigold is hedging its bets and setting seed at the same time as continuing to flower.



And as the late afternoon light slipped away and I slip-slided my way home through the mud, the sun put on a magnificent show to prove flowers are not the only ones giving hope for warmer weather.
