Allotment update February 2014

Still lots of rain in February, so not much progress on anything. At least it's been really mild as well, not a single frost all month.

An early bonus... pea twigs from a trimmed hedge on the site.

Used some to prop up the broad beans raised at home.

Quite a few sheds blown over by high winds mid month.

Caused yet another glass pane to blow out of the greenhouse.

Grandsons helped start the new pond, which by month end was filling up.

Some colour on the plot, marigolds flowering.

More flowers, daisies.

Colour also provided by another of the wonderful allotment sunsets.

Plenty of buds on one of the relocated apple trees.

With March fast approaching, still got plenty of leeks to distribute.

So the beds not looking much different from last month.

Just a few less leeks and some broad beans in the right hand bed.

  1. Looking good : )
How exciting to get started on your planting with the beans. The apple trees buds look promising. I wish I could try some of your leeks. I adore leeks.
    The sunset looks so beautiful.
    Hugs,
    Terri

  2. Goodness, your sunset looks like ours in OXON. Well done for the broad beans and well done for all the leaks. I'm in Vancouver right now, but our Van weather is very similar to our Northmoor weather and I've already planted peas, sweet peas and lettuces in the greenhouse and cold frame. We've had so much rain in OXON! Have you? I'm so glad it's all drying up now. :)

    1. Hi Veronica... good for you on the planting front! Although we've had the wettest weather ever over the winter, now we've had no rain in St Ives (Cambridgeshire) for a fortnight. Think it was me sowing some wild flower & wild grass seed in the garden that brought that on ~:o( The neighbours are going to think I've flipped if they see me using a watering can.

    1. Hi Elizabeth... thanks for following. Posts will be more regular as the 2014 season hots up.

The soil should look good, after 8 years of variable digging effort. Have look at the image on the 'What's it all about' tab of Allotment Heaven to see just what a state it was in when I started.

      Regards, John

Another new follower - found you when looking for rhubarb jam recipe which I hope to be making soon. Our 'allotment' is actually part of our garden, but cultivated in the same way. Good to see we are at about the same stage as you. Happy growing :- ))
